Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on Technology - Dictionary of Arguments
Brocker I 60 Technology/Technocracy/Gandhi: Gandhi calls machines a "great sin" (1). He regrets the exploitation of textile workers and wants to restrict textile production back to traditional manual labour. The dialogue partner asks him whether he wants to completely abolish the textile industry. Gandhi admits that this may not be easy, and pleads for a gradual reduction in industrial textile production. The interviewer says that there is not only the textile industry, and Gandhi sarcastically remarks that even the Indian images of the gods are indeed made by machine in Germany (2). Ultimately, efforts should be made to avoid all machines.
